Formulate a seasonal strategy for business category based on hindsight recaps, trend research and industry data findings to deliver year over year performance growth.
Collaborate with business partners in Planning, Allocation & Finance to build pre-season financial plans that support category strategy and assortment needs while delivering profitability.
Develop a compelling product assortment that meets the consumer’s needs, the brand vision, and financial guidelines for category.
Lead negotiation with existing and new vendors. This includes securing the terms of vendor contracts, pricing and setting expectations for the partnership. Manage the relationship throughout the season.
Act as a subject matter expert for market trends for span of control, including shifts in consumer behavior, style elements (fabric, print, pattern, color, technology), cultural/lifestyle awareness and the competitive landscape.
Engage in the larger retail sector, leaning in heavily to the outdoor market Seek inspiration from aspirational brands, then turn insights into actionable product translations that are right for areas of responsibility. Speak to macrolevel trends, by translating opportunity into actionable assortment, pricing and experience decisions.
Deliver a fully vetted, comprehensive pre-season line review to leaders, up to the Chief Merchant. Demonstrate executive presence, expertise in product category and grasp of all financial targets and goals. Lay out season strategy around product, in store experience and marketing activations.
Manage In-Season Business
Drive for business results within category from a leadership position. This includes leveraging cross functional teams to execute against adjustments to the strategy and empowering team to bring forth recommendations and appropriate decision making.
Work closely with Planning and AR on shifts in business trajectory. Leverage performance indicators and open to buy position throughout the season to chase opportunities and mitigate risk.
Assess opportunities and react to trends within the business, including identifying the underlying cause. This includes approving recommendations from team or elevating to management to gain buy-in.
Drive Operational Excellence
Oversee all operational elements of the buying office, this includes style set-up, order writing, pricing activities, etc. Ensure workload across team is manageable and adjust as needed. Set clear expectations around tasks.
Create achievable deadlines with team and hold members accountable for timely delivery. This includes partnering with team and cross functional partners when roadblocks and barriers arise.
Foster Cross Functional Collaboration
Act as the voice of the consumer and brand steward in all internal meetings. Provide guidance, insight and direction, as needed, to deliver the vision and mission of the brand.
Participate in market trips to stores to assess and monitor performance and customer satisfaction. Solicit feedback from RVPs, DMs and Store Managers, challenging where appropriate.
Stay connected to peers in Visual Merchandising, Marketing and eCommerce to collaborate on customer touchpoints. Ensure all deliverables and site actions tell the story, drive consumer engagement with the brand and enhance the product offerings. Challenge the status quo by asking tough questions of broader team to ensure category performance can be maximized.
Develop Talent and Drive Teammate Engagement
Provide direct/indirect reports with timely and regular feedback to support teammate development, growth in role and job satisfaction.
Establish strategic staffing and succession plans (0-2-year horizon) within span of control and gain leadership support; successfully deliver on proposed staffing objectives.
Drive the talent selection process in alignment with the company’s talent philosophy for all open positions; this includes reviewing resumes, interviewing, and making hiring decisions.

What we’re looking for
Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Merchandising, or another related business field or relevant working experience in Retail Management, Product Development or Consumer Products
7-10 Years total experience with 5+ years in retail buying. Previous experience managing and leading teams is required.
Ability to deliver high-impact product presentations to vendors and internal partners, including Sr. Leadership (C Suite) that embodies the mission and vision of DICK's Sporting Goods.
